His Excellency Ahmed bin Saeed Al Ameri, Chairman of Muscat Municipality, signed an agreement with AZ Engineers and Partners L.L.C to implement the Al Salam Street Upgrade Project. This project forms part of the Municipality’s efforts to advance the road and infrastructure network in Muscat Governorate, provide sustainable traffic solutions to address congestion hotspots at key locations, and increase the road’s capacity in line with urban expansion and the anticipated growth in traffic volumes.
The project targets two vital locations experiencing heavy traffic on Al Salam Street through advance the intersections and enhancing their capacity. This contributes to reducing waiting times and congestion, improve traffic flow efficiency, and road safety in the area.

The first location involves upgrading the Industrial Roundabout intersection, where Al Salam Street meets Al Emaar Street, through constructing an underpass along Al Salam Street to allow traffic to continue in both directions without stopping. The underpass will comprise two lanes in each direction, with additional space allocated to allow for the addition of a third lane in the future. This will provide the flexibility necessary to increase the road’s capacity in line with future requirements.
The site progress will include the construction of two-lane flyover routes, together with the necessary entry and exit points, as well as advancing the roads’ efficiency connected to the intersection. These measures contribute to organising vehicle movement and facilitating travel between the surrounding roads. The second location involves upgrading the traffic signal-controlled intersection between Al Salam Street and Al Khair Street through constructing an underpass along Al Salam Street, comprising two lanes in each direction, with additional space allocated for a third lane to be added in the future. The development will also include two-lane flyover routes, besides free-turning lanes. Thereby facilitating vehicle movement and decreasing waiting times at the intersection.

His Excellency Ahmed bin Saeed Al Ameri, Head of Muscat Municipality, affirmed that the project forms part of the Municipality’s ongoing efforts to develop the road network and boost its efficiency in areas experiencing urban growth and increasing traffic volumes. He noted that the project’s design takes into account both current and future needs via providing solutions that reinforce traffic flow and allow for the expansion of the road’s capacity when required.
His Excellency indicated: “In planning road projects, Muscat Municipality is keen to adopt a proactive approach that takes into account growth rates, urban expansion and future traffic requirements. Accordingly, the project has been designed with sufficient space to allow for the addition of lanes in the future, reducing the need for major structural modifications at later stages, contributing to the optimal use of financial resources, and limiting the traffic impacts associated with expansion works.”.
The Al Salam Street Upgrade Project is expected to enhance traffic flow efficiency along the road and at the associated intersections, improve safety and ease of mobility, and offer more sustainable infrastructure capable of meeting future requirements. Thus serving the residents and visitors of Muscat Governorate and supporting urban development.
