21/07/2026

The Oman Aquarium Blitz Chess Championship concluded with a closing ceremony recognising the competition’s winners. The event was organised by Oman Aquarium in collaboration with the Oman Chess Committee, with the support and sponsorship of Muscat Governorate, and attracted 80 participants from various age groups.

Muscat Governorate’s sponsorship of the championship reflects its commitment to supporting sporting activities and purposeful community initiatives, while encouraging events that foster intellectual development, promote positive competition, and strengthen community engagement.

The championship brought together a distinguished group of chess players and enthusiasts, who competed in the unique surroundings of Oman Aquarium among its marine life exhibits. The venue offered an exceptional experience that combined the mental challenge of chess with entertainment, creating a distinctive atmosphere for the competition. The championship is the first event of its kind to be officially hosted at Oman Aquarium in the Middle East, highlighting the organisers’ commitment to delivering innovative events that appeal to all age groups while providing an ideal platform for discovering and developing talent.

This tournament followed the internationally recognised blitz chess format, with each player competing in nine rounds. Each game was played with a time control of three minutes per player, with an additional two seconds awarded for every move. The matches were highly competitive and fast-paced, demanding exceptional concentration, strategic thinking, and accurate decision-making. Chessboards were connected to a central control system and live broadcast platform, enabling referees to oversee the games efficiently while allowing spectators to follow the matches clearly. The championship was officiated by a team of specialist arbiters, including an internationally certified arbiter with extensive experience in managing official chess tournaments.

This championship aimed to develop participants’ logical thinking and strategic analysis skills, strengthen their ability to solve problems and make decisions under time pressure, encourage interaction and the exchange of experience among players, and reinforce the values of sportsmanship within an environment that combined learning with enjoyment.

At the conclusion of the championship, nine winners were honoured. The top three competitors received gold, silver, and bronze medals, while those finishing from fourth to ninth place were presented with valuable prizes in recognition of their outstanding performances throughout the competition.

Through its sponsorship of the championship, Muscat Governorate reaffirms its commitment to supporting events that combine sport, knowledge, and entertainment, while encouraging initiatives capable of creating a positive impact on society. The sponsorship also reflects the Governorate’s commitment to strengthening partnerships with various institutions to deliver high-quality programmes that contribute to skills development and enrich community engagement
