Muscat Municipality Awards Two Projects to Address Rainwater Accumulation in North Al Ghubrah and South Al Mawaleh

   As part of its ongoing efforts to boost infrastructure efficiency and mitigate the impacts of rainwater accumulation, Muscat Municipality has awarded the consultancy services project for designing stormwater drainage channels in North Al Ghubrah in Bawshar, as well as the project for the design and implementation of rainwater accumulation mitigation works in South Al Mawaleh in Seeb. This projects aim to develop the surface water drainage system and strengthen the readiness of urban areas to cope with various weather conditions and climate changes.

      The North Al Ghubrah project aims to prepare a fully integrated detailed design for a stormwater drainage system through implementing the necessary topographical, hydrological, and hydraulic studies. While developing engineering solutions capable of accommodating water flows and reducing flood risks, according to the 2017 Omani Road Design Guide and in line with the rapid urban progress taking place.

       The project works include carrying out topographical surveys, studying existing utilities and services, and preparing hydrological and hydraulic studies to analyse water movement and identify the most appropriate engineering solutions. The project will examine ways to improve the efficiency of the current drainage system and design an integrated stormwater drainage network comprising drainage channels, culverts, surface drainage systems, and supporting structures, while taking into account the available spaces required to implement the design solutions derived from the study findings.

        The South Al Mawaleh project includes constructing six box culverts on Mazoon Street, with internal dimensions of 3 metres in width and 1.5 metres in height. Furthermore, constructing an open channel equipped with side protection works extending to a total length of 1,200 metres. This project consists of implementing a subsidiary stormwater drainage network extending approximately 800 metres, the reconstruction of the affected road and the execution of the necessary protection works. As well as, relocating utility lines affected by the project to ensure uninterrupted services and avoid disruption during implementation.

      His Excellency Engineer Ahmed bin Said Al Ameri, Head of Muscat Municipality, confirmed that the two projects form part of a range of projects being implemented by the municipality to address water accumulation sites and enhance infrastructure efficiency across the various Muscat Governorate’s wilayats. He explained that the municipality is proceeding according to carefully studied plans to develop the surface water drainage system and improve its preparedness in line with urban expansion and population growth. Thereby enhancing the infrastructure’s ability to respond to climate changes and varying weather conditions.

       His Excellency noted that North Al Ghubrah is among the areas most affected by water accumulation, which necessitates swift intervention. He added that the stormwater drainage network design project represents a fundamental step within Muscat Municipality’s approach towards proactive planning to address rainwater accumulation challenges through integrated engineering solutions based on precise scientific studies and modern design standards, ensuring a more efficient and sustainable drainage system capable of accommodating rainfall volumes and reducing flood risks.

     He added that the South Al Mawaleh rainwater accumulation mitigation project is one of the vital projects deliver sustainable and comprehensive engineering solutions to challenges associated with water accumulation. This project is expected to contribute to improving traffic flow, enhancing public safety standards, and protecting lives, property, and infrastructure. While ensuring continuous services during implementation works and adverse weather conditions. Thereby positively reflecting on quality of life and supporting the rapid urban development.

      His Excellency emphasised that these efforts come within Muscat Municipality’s commitment to protecting lives, property, and infrastructure, and improving the readiness of urban areas, which contributes to improving quality of life and strengthening infrastructure efficiency in addressing climate changes.

       It is worth noting that the implementation period for the North Al Ghubrah project extends to 187 days, including a 7-day preparation period followed by 180 days to execute the works’ accomplishment. The contractual duration for the South Al Mawaleh project is 304 days, in accordance with the approved timelines for both projects, to achieve the desired objectives of reducing risks of water accumulation, boosting drainage efficiency, and advancing services provided to the community.
