Muscat Governorate Discusses with the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority Enhancing Telecommunication Services in the Governorate

His Excellency Sayyid Saud bin Hilal Al Busaidi, Governor of Muscat, met with His Excellency Eng. Omar bin Hamdan Al Ismaili, CEO of the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA), with the aim of updating the Governorate on the progress of telecommunication service projects within its geographical boundaries and reviewing challenges related to the distribution of services. The meeting also discussed ways to enhance internet coverage and improve its quality and efficiency.
Their Excellencies Walis, His Excellency the Head of Muscat Municipality, directors-general of various municipality directorates, and numerous representatives from the Municipal Council attended the meeting.
His Excellency Sayyid Saud bin Hilal Al Busaidi emphasized that the visit comes as part of the efforts to strengthen coordination and conduct direct field assessment of telecommunication services in the wilayats of the Governorate. He commended the projects presented by the TRA during the meeting, which focused on service development and responsive solutions to the Governorate’s needs, as well as the indicators shared that reflect progress in service levels and the enhanced readiness of networks.
He added that telecommunication services are a key enabler for facilitating access to services, stressing the importance of ongoing cooperation and consideration of the perspectives shared by the walis and municipal officials. Their participation contributed to clarifying the specific requirements of their wilayats.
The meeting reviewed the current status of telecommunication services in the Governorate and discussed ongoing efforts to enhance mobile network coverage and expand internet services to meet the needs of the population and improve service quality. The two sides discussed the projects underway and future development plans, confirming the importance of continued work to strengthen efficiency and reliability in the sector.
Additionally, the meeting included a presentation of the results of field visits conducted in several villages and areas across the Governorate to assess the condition of communication networks and follow up on project implementation in cooperation with telecommunication companies. Officials from the TRA and telecom operators also listened to the comments submitted by the walis and director-generals regarding each wilayat’s telecommunication services and ways to improve them.
According to the visual presentation shared by the TRA, indicators revealed significant progress in telecommunication services in Muscat Governorate: high-speed internet coverage in schools has reached 100%, while fixed broadband coverage has exceeded 98% via 5G networks and 84% via optical fiber.
The presentation highlighted major growth in the sector’s infrastructure: the number of 5G stations increased to 2,076 in 2025 compared to 131 stations in 2020; and the number of 4G stations reached 5,512 compared to 3,073 during the same period. In 2025, the telecommunications sector implemented a set of projects including the construction of 50 new stations, the execution of 5 fiber-optic projects, and the upgrade of 279 stations to 5G technology.
