Muscat Governorate conducts ‘Renewable Energy for Leaders’ Training Programme

The Oman Institute for Energy conducted a training programme entitled ‘Strategic Introduction to Renewable Energy for Leaders’ on Monday, attended by His Excellency Sayyid Saud bin Hilal Al Busaidi, Governor of Muscat, Their Excellencies the Walis of Muscat wilayats. Besides, the directors-general of the municipal sector and relevant departments at the Governorate General Office.
This programme aims to provide participants with a comprehensive and administrative overview of future energy concepts and opportunities. Thus aligning with global directives to energy transition and boosting the national competencies` readiness to deal with latest developments in this vital sector.
Engineer Nasr Al-Siyabi, Director General of the Oman Institute for Energy, confirmed that conducting this programme expresses the Institute`s commitment to creating national capabilities and boosting Oman`s regional and global competitiveness in energy fields. Additionally, promoting renewable energy sources and innovative techniques. Thus, it aligns with global transformations and contributes to achieving Oman Vision 2040`s objectives for a sustainable energy future.
Al-Siyabi noted that the programme will run for four days in Muscat Governorate, kicking off today with a programme for government executive officials in the governorate. Besides a programme for technical competencies and middle officials conducted at the institute`s headquarters, concluding with a field visit to one of the renewable energy projects in Muscat Governorate.
The programme discussed several topics. They focused on future energy concepts, including transformation drivers in the energy sector, influencing factors of climate change, and various types of energy and their associated advantages, challenges and risks. As well as, reviewing global energy consumption and demand, energy management systems, carbon economics, energy efficiency, and introducing the concept of levelised cost of energy (LCOE).
The other topic highlighted energy mix opportunities, comprising an introduction to energy mixes and the significance of the oil and gas sector during the transition stage, business and contracts types in this sector, energy security and energy sovereignty issues, and investment opportunities in generation, transmission, storage and distribution. The role of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards in financial ranking and future consumer behaviour and case studies on energy mix were also explained.
The programme also discussed renewable energy opportunities in Oman, explaining the concept of net zero and the key enablers to achieve it by 2050, as well as highlighting the key factors that boost Oman`s competitiveness in the energy transition. They include the ambitious hydrogen programme, the geographical location and geopolitical expectations, and Oman`s unique solar and wind energy assets. The sessions also introduced strategic purposes to advance the green hydrogen sector and the serious steps Oman implements releasing the possibilities of a promising future economy.
Conducting this programme recognises the pivotal role of the Muscat Governorate and municipal sector in supporting national renewable energy directives through promoting infrastructure, road and construction services that implement modern energy projects. Muscat Governorate contributes to boosting government efforts to enable national energy projects, while improving the efficiency of municipal services that align with environmental sustainability standards. This programme confirms its practical commitment to contributing to achieving the Oman Vision 2040 targets through utilising to develop national competencies and innovative solutions that enhance urban sector efficiency in Muscat Governorate and promote sustainable development.
