Sea Traditions Committee in Muscat discusses Seaweed Farming Project

The Sea Traditions Committee in Muscat held its regular meeting today (Monday), chaired by His Excellency Ali bin Said Al Saidi, Wali of Muscat and Chairman of the Committee. It was attended by of the Committee’s members, to discuss a number of issues relating to the fisheries sector.
This meeting discussed the implementation of previous recommendations, and the results of a recent field meeting held with fishermen in the village of Harmel, covering the use of hover nets (known locally as hawi nets or spinning nets). During their discussion, members highlighted the main challenges facing fishermen, and the committee confirmed the continuous coordination with the concerned entities to resolve the obstacles and find solutions to them.
The seaweed farming project proposed to be implemented opposite the fish farming center in Al Bustan village. The purposes of the project were reviewed and its anticipated role in promoting biodiversity and supporting food security efforts and contributing to developing the fisheries sector.
During the meeting, several issues facing fishermen in some coastal villages were discussed, and several suggestions were presented to presented to resolve them in coordination with the relevant entities.
