Muscat Governorate has conducted athree-day training programme on ‘Etiquette and International Protocol’,targeting a number of employees from the governorate`s various administrative departments. This programme aimed to enhance participants` knowledge of the principles and fundamentals of etiquette and protocol, and train them to deal with others according to local and international values and traditions.
Dr Yousef Al Hassani, an expert in etiquette and international protocol, gave the programme. It focused on the definition of etiquette, its origins and importance, in addition to understanding modern public relations and its basics. It also introduced the Vienna Convention of 1815, which defines the priorities in the protocol, and the receiving and leaving of official visitors, whether from inside or outside the country.
The programme introduces the arts of etiquette and protocol combining practical applications with theoretical aspects to provide a full overview of appropriate behaviours in official meetings. It includes receiving and dealing with guests, the importance of good eye contact at official social occasions, and focusing on enhancing the skills of interaction with dignitaries at local and international forums and events.
Dr Yousef Al Hassani confirmed that polite interaction in the work environment motivates continuity and creativity, noting that the art of etiquette and protocol has become a necessary science and not just a luxury. He explained that human relations require a moral framework, quoting the moralities of the Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him), which contributed to the of Islam spread.
He pointed out that etiquette is a behaviour that ensures best relationships in social and work life, and should be committed to everyone for the benefit of individuals and institutions.‘Etiquette is not the exclusive right of a particular group, but is connected to the whole humanity, as the organisation of relationships requires the protocols to promote amicability and avoid conflicts,’ he highlighted.
He also spoke about the moral characteristics of the Omani people, quoting the Prophet`s saying, ‘If the people of Oman had come to you, they would neither curse nor hit you’,reflecting the Omani originality in morality. He emphasised that the training courses always enhance this principle, keep the Omani identity, spread it in communities, and work places.
Sumaya Al Dhahiriya, Head of Training at Muscat Governorate, stressed the importance of the Etiquette and Protocol Programme to offer participants with basic knowledge on the etiquette and hospitality protocol, and enhance personal skills that contribute to improve the official organisation’s identity.
These programmes’ choice was in line with the training plans and based on the employees` knowledge and skill requirements. Muscat Governorate, represented by the Department of Human Resources, has been attracting efficient and qualified people to implement these programmes. Therefore, they achieve the desired purposes.
Hajar Al Mayasi, Coordinator, added that the programme is closely related to her job, as successful coordination in workplaces and public events requires accurate knowledge of the rules of etiquette and protocol, so these rules’ study and understanding is important to communicate easily and create an organised environment. The programme increased her self-confidence as she learned more about etiquette and protocol in the work environment particularly.
This programme was part of Muscat Governorate`s efforts to develop its employees` skills in protocol and etiquette, which enhances relationships with various entities both locally and internationally.
